President's Day

A birthday bash for President Abraham Lincoln and President George Washington was complete with soldiers from their armies and many visitors from the community.

President Lincoln shows a commission paper for Richard Brindley, a First Lieutenant in the Second Regiment of Infantry, dated May 1861, signed by both President Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton.  The paper was on loan for the day from Ray Cavanugh of Monroe.

This commission paper was signed shortly after the start of the Civil War and you can see the darker signature of Edward Stanton in the center and the lighter signature of President Lincoln to the right.

Here is a close up view of the bottom of the page, with both signatures.
